The new building replaces the oldest complex on the Interlaken Hospital campus.
When running a hospital, constant, pleasant temperatures are essential both for patients’ health and a good working environment for the staff. The new building, which replaces Block E in the oldest complex, also features a modernised cooling system. The solution chosen was standard chiller i-FX2-W-04. This system is marked by its high energy efficiency and its outstanding heat recovery. In summer, the waste heat generated in service is kept and used, e.g. for heating water. At times between seasons, waste heat is also used for heating. Waste heat usage reduces energy consumption and boosts the system's overall energy efficiency.
One particular feature is that the chiller is run partially flooded, has a wide output range and can also handle high flow temperatures for using waste heat. This is achieved using two dual-rotor screw compressors with an inbuilt frequency converter and variable Vi technology that allows seamless power adjustment from 20 to 100 per cent. Considering that the chiller is a flooded system, it requires very little refrigerant. The combination of optimum efficiency and reduced refrigerant levels makes this standard chiller particularly innovative and sustainable under partial load. Two independent cooling circuits also ensure maximum operational reliability.
Super collaboration
The collaboration between the installer, the designer and CTA ran like clockwork. The chiller was even delivered ahead of schedule, saving costs.
The hydraulically reversible water/water chiller and heat pump achieves very impressive performance and is marked by the low level of refrigerant it requires. Two speed-regulated Bitzer screw compressors with regulated Vi ensure that the system always matches the building's cooling requirements. The newly developed hybrid vaporiser technology means that the machine can achieve the same energy efficiency as a flooded system but using considerably less refrigerant.
